The system still follows the Soviet model, although some instruction is in Uzbek. In the late 1980s, a few ethnic Tajik schools appeared in large cities along with a university in Samarkand. They were virtually all closed down in 1992 as a result of a decline in relations between the leaderships of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
